Aldershot Town Reserves 2 - 4 Millwall Reserves

Last updated : 20 August 2008 By Stray Shots Team

Danny Hylton got matters off to a searing start in the 3rd minute; Harrison Bayley chipped from the right, Reece Connelly back-flicked his header for Hylton to volley past Edwards in the Millwall goal into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Ricky Newman was close to extending Shots lead after he collected Hylton's lay-off and curled a shot inches wide of the right-hand post. Youth team forward Reece Connelly had a chance following an incisive pass from Lewis Chalmers, Connelly ran into the ball in space but hit his shot wide of goal.

Millwall equalised after 14 minutes, Gary Alexander ran onto a long pass and delicately chipped Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz. The sides seemed well matched and put on an entertaining display in the August sun. Anthony Straker gave a strong performance at left-back. On 36 minutes he hit an accurate pass out of defence which Connelly won then laid off to Newman, his looping shot just cleared the bar to ripple the netting.

Speaking after the match, Lions manager Richard Shaw described the match as a "game of two halfs" for his winning side.

"We were diabolical in the first half" he told his clubs official website, "I was very disappointed with every aspect of our play both with and without the ball.

"There was a real lack of passion and desire with the possible exceptions of Gary Alexander and Ashley Grimeswho did well throughout the game. It doesn't matter whether you're a senior pro out of the First Tem picture at present, a young kid coming through to this level or finding your way back to match fitness after injury, you have to show attitude and desire, and those qualities were largly missing in the forst 45-minutes."

He continued, "A few things were said at half time, a the second half was a different story all-together. We showed a real 'will to win' after the break and created a number of very good chances. I have to give credit to the players for the way they responded, but the lesson is that if we start games at any level in the way we did this one, we'll have lost most of them by half-time."
