REPORT FROM CHARLTON'S WEBSITE

A brace from Junior Mendez condemned Charlton's reserves to a second successive league defeat on Monday night as
Aldershot Town ran out 2-0 winners at Stonebridge Road

In Charlton's first home game of the new season, Mendez put the Shots in front in the 20th minute with a fine left-footed drive, before increasing his tally for the evening shortly after the break.

The result means Mark Kinsella's Addicks have lost their first two matches of the new league season after going down to a 3-1 defeat to local rivals Crystal Palace in their opening game.

In terms of team news, Rob Elliot was named in goal for Charlton, starting in front of a defensive four of Chris Solly, Linvoy Primus, Yado Mambo and Rashid Yussuff, who began the match in an unfamiliar left-back role.

After last Tuesday's Group B draw with Queens Park Rangers in the new Football Combination Invitation Cup, it was the second reserve outing in six days for Primus, who is expected to tie up his loan switch from Portsmouth at the end of the week.

The midfield compromised of Martin Christensen, Jonjo Shelvey, captain Jose Semedo and Darren Ambrose, while Stuart Fleetwood and Ben Godfrey led the attack.

Aldershot had the first effort of note on five minutes when Mendez pounced on an error by Yado Mambo but saw his drive fly wide of Elliot's left-hand post.

With Alan Pardew and Phil Parkinson watching from the stands, Charlton's first real attack of the game came in the 17th minute, Godfrey sending a header straight into the arms of Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz after excellent work on the right wing by Christensen, back in action after a recent hamstring injury.

Less than a minute later, young Charlton striker Godfrey looked odds on to give the Addicks the lead when he met Fleetwood's cross but watched his first-time shot shave the foot of the far post.

And the Shots were in front two minutes later, Mendez skipping unchallenged across the edge of the box before firing a left-footed drive beyond Elliot.

It was almost 2-0 to the visitors in the 33rd minute, Rob Elvin sending a 25-yard effort wide after Semedo had lost the ball in midfield, before Elliot did well to hold a stinging shot from a similar range from Jason Milletti.

Godfrey saw claims for a penalty turned down in the 42nd minute after tumbling under a challenge by Shots goalkeeper Jaimez-Ruiz and the referee brought the first-half proceedings to a close soon after.

Aldershot should have increased their advantage seconds after the restart when Mendez raced through after a weak backpass by Primus but blazed his shot well over the bar.

At the other end, Jaimez-Ruiz saved well at the feet of Fleetwood, but the Shots doubled their lead in the 48th minute, Mendez slotting home to claim his second of the evening after Kirk Hudson's initial drive had been parried away by Elliot. Jack Clark's introduction for Godfrey on the hour mark saw a change of formation for the Addicks, Yussuff reverting back to his more customary left-wing role, with Ambrose tucking in just behind Fleetwood.

And the Addicks should have pulled one back in the 65th minute only for the unmarked Primus to head Shelvey's corner over from just a few yards out.

In the 75h minute, Danny Hylton went close to making it 3-0 to the Shots, twisting and turning in the area but seeing his shot flash across the face of Elliot's goal.

Fine play by Yussuff and Clark on the left flank set up Fleetwood in the 78th minute but the forward's angled drive cannoned back off the inside of the far post. Clark's follow up was smothered on the line by Jaimez-Ruiz.

With time running out, Ambrose then saw a chip stopped on the line - possibly with the use of a hand - by an Aldershot defender, before the official called an end to the game and a second straight league loss for the Addicks.
