Cox and Smith won their midfield battles, Connolly and Pearson linked well with Castle on the right, against a multi-national Rs side. The game's first real chance fell to Castle who cut in from the right flank, but elected to cross the ball to Mekki rather than shoot. However on 10 minutes, a Connolly pass put Castle through with Rs keeper Bulmer and the former Bournemouth winger drilled the ball into the bottom left corner, to give the underdogs a 1-0 lead.

As happened many times this season, the Shots should have added to the scoreline through Pearson and Mekki, before the hosts levelled on 20 minutes through Molloey from just inside the penalty area.

On 28 minutes the Rs took the lead from the penalty spot through Parker, after Nimmo was adjudged to have up-ended Vauterpool.
