The young Shots travelled to Southend United for the first of four League Cup group stage games. Despite the distance the Shots were looking forward to a fixture against a good team that love to get the ball on the floor and play. This game lived up to expectations.

Both teams started well, making their intentions clear from the start. The Shots dominated the early part of the game with some very good flowing passing movement, organised support play, and looked comfortable defending against technically strong opponents. The first strike came to Shots on six minutes, when George Landais intercepted a back pass to feed Adam Mekki, who had some work to do, and with good footwork beat off the challenge of two defenders to gain time and space to get off a shot from some 40 yards, which unfortunately drifted wide of the target. This continued and it was the Shots with the early running and majority of possession.
