The Shots Ladies lost out on winning the League Cup after losing a penalty shoot-out after the match ended one-all after extra time at Farnborough Gate.

The game had been end-to-end affair, with Southampton dominating the first half and they finally went ahead with a well worked ball down the left channel and their centre forward raced past The Shots defence to fire home.

The Shots tried in vein to get back into the game with a number of chances going begging, but as the first half was coming to a close, the home side got the lifeline they needed.

From a corner the ball wasn't cleared by the Saints defence and it fell nicely for Emma North to pass the ball beyond the Saints keeper to make it one all at half time.

The second half saw The Shots finding the going a lot easier, and the introduction of Ferguson started to cause the visitors more problems at the back.

The game still raged from one end to the other, however The Shots had the better chances. With extra time added to the end of the match, neither side could break down their opposition and it was stubborn defences who were holding out and as the clock ticked down to the final whistle, The Shots broke and after Ferguson unleashed a shot which the Saints keeper palmed away, Shepherd could only watch as her effort sailed over the bar.

In the penalty shoot out the Shots Ladies missed twice and eventually went out 4-2 on penalties.

Speaking after the game, manager Chris Liddicott said, "The game was recorded by Women Scene Football Magazine today and it lived up to its great billing.

"The pace of the game was unbelievable for women's football and the girls gave everything today and we are extremely proud of everyone of them.

"A special mention must go to all the Shots fans who turned out to watch the match and they gave great vocal support and I know the girls wanted to thank each and every one of the supporters for getting behind them.

"I hope we have shown that we are getting there as a team. It was always a bonus to get through each round of the cup and we're back to League action next week when we travel to Wycombe Wanderers and hopefully we'll bounce back from this disappointment."
