What looked, on paper, before the game a very tough test for the boys (Roehampton being last year’s Premier Elite Runners-Up and current League Cup holders) certainly proved to be the case as the Shots were duly dumped out of the Cup at the first hurdle.
From the first whistle the pace and movement of the Roehampton midfield and forwards had the boys on the back foot.
With the Shots showing next to nothing up front (and at a loss to work-out a well-marshalled sweeper system) it was only a matter of time before Roehampton scored – twice, as it turned out. H/T 0-2.
It is not known what was said at the break but whatever it was, appeared to do the trick as the Shots came out for the second half, firing on all cylinders.
Pacy wing play down the right helped the Reds to force a succession of deliciously taken corners (must have been about 10) from Toby Elstow – how only 1 goal was scored (a header from George Patten) shall forever remain a mystery.
1-2 and another goal needed to force extra time. It was not to be.
Pushing too far up the pitch (no criticism here) the Reds were caught out twice in the dying minutes by 2 breakaway goals.
Final score 1-4. No disgrace in going out of the Cup to such good opponents boys – but heading practice (from corners) on Tuesday!
