Alty Down To Bare Bones Ahead Of Shots Visit

After the departure of Cavell Coo to Witton Albion and the loss of three more players to injury and suspension, the Alty boss is struggling to put together a 16-man squad for Saturday's game against Aldershot.

To make matters worse, young striker Matty Berkeley departs this week on international duty with the St Kitts and Nevis under-23 team ahead of their Olympic qualifier against Haiti.

And with Alty desperate to reverse their fortunes after picking up just two points from their first five Blue Square Premier games, the situation is nearing crisis point.

Speaking exclusively to the Sale and Altrincham Messenger, he said: "I'm absolutely looking for players.

"We are threadbare because at the moment I hardly have five substitutes to field for Saturday's game.

"We started the season with a first team squad of 21 players, two of them goalkeepers, and have already lost five of them for various reasons.

"But football is all about solving problems and moving yourself up, so it's a situation we just have to deal with.

"We have played some decent enough football so far this season but we have not played it enough. We have made some elementary mistakes and that's something we have to resolve."

Coo decided to bring an end to his short spell at Moss Lane after failing to break into the first team.

The defender only signed for the club earlier this month after a successful trial period during preseason and made just one substitute appearance, in the 2-2 draw at Halifax Town.

Meanwhile, Gary Scott will be out for around two weeks after picking up an injury in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Grays and Val Owen requires an x-ray after limping out of Monday's draw at Stafford.

Last season's top scorer Colin Little did not play against Stafford and will also miss the forthcoming games with Aldershot and York after his sending off against Grays to leave Heathcote rueing his luck.

"We are hoping Val's injury is not a fracture because that may mean he is out for a long time," he added.

"Gary Scott is out for two weeks and Colin is suspended, leaving us with selection issues.

"I'm disappointed that Cavell has decided to leave but he wanted to play first team football.

"I told him when he came here that he wouldn't just walk into the team and I felt he had a bit to do yet before he could get a regular spot.

"We're going through a little transitional period right now. New signings are taking a bit of time to gel with the rest of the team and now we have these problems.

"But, as I said, we just have to keep working hard and it will come together."
