Coventry City's Carling Cup Injury Woes

Alan Poole has reported that Coventry City boss Chris Coleman has welcomed an early season opportunity to demonstrate the competition for starting places at the Ricoh Arena following player injuries, insisting that he will be guided by form rather than reputation - even when he has a full squad available.

Robbie Simpson, Leon McKenzie and Kevin Thornton are all in contention tomorrow after making an impact as second-half substitutes in Saturday's 2-0 victory against Norwich.

"They all did well," said Coleman, "which was very satisfying.

"I've obviously got an idea in my mind about what is my strongest team - every manager does - but I don't want anybody getting complacent.

"It's possible for a player to have a bad game, perhaps a couple of bad games, but we don't want anybody thinking that they are part of the furniture and all they have to do is show up.

"We want competition for places because that's the only way forward for us. We've got a smaller squad this season, but it's a stronger squad."

Tabb was replaced at half-time on Saturday after being crudely chopped down on the edge of the box by Norwich defender Dejan Stefanovic.

"He was perhaps lucky not to get a red card for that," said Coleman. "Jay took a knock on his knee but hopefully it won't keep him out for too long.

"We took Julian off 20 minutes from time because he nicked his groin and you need to be careful with things like that.

"We've already got Leon Best out and the last thing we need is another injury so we took him off as a precaution before we were forced to."

Meanwhile, Michael Mifsud will reurn to the Sky Blues attack for tomorrows Carling Cup tie at home against Gary Waddocks side.

The Maltese striker, whose £1.5million move to Bristol City broke down acrimoniously two weeks ago, gets his chance because of a growing Coventry injury list and Mifsud is expected to play on the left while Robbie Simpson will be on the right of a four man attack that also includes summer recruits Clinton Morrison and Freddy Eastwood.

Y
oung goalkeeper Danny Ireland will make his competitive debut because Kieren Westwood has picked up a minor injury in training and veteran Andy Marshall is not match fit.
