Injury Worries As Shrimps Prepare For Shots

Skipper Jim Bentley took a kick to the shin at Exeter on Saturday and Michael Howard got a knock in training on Monday - both are now doubtful for the Aldershot match.

With Conference play-off positions changing hands weekly and the Shrimps having seen their 'games in hand' advantage whittled away recently every point from now to the end of the season will be crucial.

Morecambe are in the middle of a hectic run of Saturday and Tuesday games, emphasising the need for a good squad system.

This was utilised - without success in the end - at Exeter on Saturday when manager, Sammy McIlroy made three changes.

Danny Carlton, Wayne Curtis and Adam Yates were rested to make way for Dave McNiven (recalled from his prolific loan period at Stafford), Jamie Burns and Chris Blackburn.

McIlroy explained: "Danny and Wayne haven't long recovered from injury and were then thrown into a busy schedule and I thought they needed a breather to try and take stock and, I hope, come back refreshed.

"Adam has also been asked to play just about every game having just stepped up to this level of football and I thought his performances had slipped a little in recent weeks.

"But this is a busy time and I will be shuffling things a bit, I have to."

The latest results have highlighted a lack of firepower for Morecambe - even in games where they have dominated the play the Shrimps have failed to create enough chances, a problem McIlroy says he and the players fully acknowledge.

"Defensively I am quite happy. We are keeping things tight and restricting opponents to very few opportunities," the manager told The Visitor.

"On Saturday it was a case of both defences playing well and I thought it would take a bad error or a moment of brilliance to settle it.

"It was going towards a nailed on nil-nil when their sub hit a wonder strike.

"But we know we're not creating enough chances. I'm not putting the blame on midfielders or strikers independently, they have to combine properly to make the openings.

"We've all talked about it and we know what we have to do.

"There are a lot of games coming up over the next few weeks and we'll be working hard to get the attacking side of our game going properly."
