The Iron return to Blue Square South action tomorrow with a trip to play Bath City, having had their interest in the FA Trophy ended by the Shots last weekend.
The Blue Square Premier leaders were 3-0 winners in the third round tie.
Patterson was suitably impressed by Aldershot - and wants his team to follow their example as they battle to reach the play-offs for the second successive season.
He said: "There was a difference between the two sides in terms of the fitness and the young, hungry former pros they had.
"That's something I want to see at Braintree.
"If we go up, that is the benchmark that we want to achieve.
"We got punished for our mistakes and the higher you go in football, the more costly they can be."
