Supporters Direct launched the papers - Developing Public Policy to Encourage Supporter Community Ownership in Football and Developing Football Regulation to Encourage Supporter Community Ownership in Football - in the Boothroyd Room at Portcullis House, Westminster.
Hosted by Tom Greatrex MP (Rutherglen and Hamilton West), and attended by a wide, cross-party range of Parliamentarians, the event featured speeches from Mr Greatrex, Greg Mulholland MP (Leeds North West), Ian Lucas MP (Wrexham) and a note from Jessica Lee MP (Erewash), who was scheduled to speak but was called to Parliament at the last minute. There were also speeches from Supporters Direct chief executive Dave Boyle, and directors Dame Pauline Green and Brian Burgess.
As well as Parliamentarians and figures from the game, the launch was also notable for the excellent turnout from the Trust movement, reflecting the level of momentum gathering behind reform of football's governing and ownership structure. Among the MPs attending were members of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, and the event will surely have demonstrated to them the strength of the case for reform, as they begin to compile their report.
The papers are intended to provide the Coalition with the tools to act on the pledge made in their Programme for Government: to "encourage the reform of football governance rules to support the co-operative ownership of football clubs by supporters."
