The Lewisham-born stopper started his career with Charlton Athletic as a trainee before signing for Chelsea for a fee of £350000 in October, 1992.

The 34-year-old enjoyed loan spells at Middlesbrough and Southend during a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge and made a switch back to Charlton in August, 1996 for a fee of £165000.

Barness then signed for Bolton Wanderers in 2000, where he was for five years until his switch to Plymouth.
