Thirty-year-old Johnson retired from all forms of football last year because of a persistant back injury, but will train with the Brewers in order to get back to full-fitness.
Burton manager Nigel Clough told his club's official website: "He is coming to do a little bit of training with us and we will see how he feels.
"There is a possibility he may join us. He wants to come and have a look and he wants to see how he feels about it."
Johnson is also currently helping League One side Nottingham Forest in a coaching capacity.
The former Manchester United trainee had notched up 328 league appearances for six different clubs, before calling time on his career in 2006.
The Jamaican forward will see Conference football as the ideal stepping stone to getting his career back on track.
