Conference News: Saturday Round Up

Last updated : 02 September 2007 By Stray Shots Team
It was a game that ended with Torquay United on top and Stafford Rangers rooted to the bottom of the Blue Square Premier table on Saturday as the Devonians put Rangers to the sword with a 2-0 reverse at Plainmoor.

Chris Todd gave the Gulls the lead towards the end of a one-sided first half before Elliot Benyon slotted home in the dying minutes to seal the victory.

Stafford had started the brighter of the two sides as Marco Adaggio saw a long-range effort palmed away by Torquay keeper Simon Rayner.

But Todd's looping header in the 43rd minute handed the home side the half
time lead.

And they never looked like relinquishing that lead after the break. Chris Zebroski volleyed straight at keeper Rob Duggan before Benyon sealed the win 9 minutes from time.

Substitute Ishmael Welsh's low ball found Benyon with his back to goal and he turned defender Wayne Daniel before sliding home.

Stevenage Borough's charge up the table continued at pace as Craig Dobson's first half strike gave Mark Stimson's men a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Ebbsfleet United at Stonebridge Road.

Boro have not lost a match since the opening day reverse at Crawley and their unbeaten run never looked in jeopardy at Fleet.

The home side started brightly but always looked vulnerable to the counter-attack and were eventually punished on the half hour.

A George Purcell corner fell straight to the feet of Daryl McMahon and with Fleet committed up field the Stevange winger raced up the left, beat his man, and crossed for Dobson to rifle home from 8 yards.

Liam Daish's side upped the tempo after the break with both Mark DeBolla and striker Chukki Eribenne going close but the breakthrough wouldn't come.

Fleet captain Paul McCarthy was dismissed for handling on his own goal line in the dying seconds, but Scott Tynan save John Nutter's penalty.

Aldershot Town`s Louie Soares struck a 78th minute winner to earn a 2-1 victory and pile more misery on struggling Altrincham at Moss Lane.

The lively Shots winger had been a constant threat to the Robins defence and he got on the end of Ben Harding's cross to lift Gary Waddock's men into the top five.

The visitors had taken the lead in the 24th minute when striker Jonny Dixon also benefited from some good work by Harding to fire past Stuart Coburn from the edge of the box.

But Altrincham were level on the stroke of half-time when defender Darren Tinson pounded on an error by Nikki Bull.

The Shots number one couldn't hold Steve Aspinall's cross and the veteran defender pounced to equalise from close range.

But Altrincham's defensive failings reappeared at the end and Soares' strike kept them in the bottom four.

Aaron O'Connor's late strike sent promoted Droylsden on their way to their fourth defeat on the spin as Grays Athletic won 2-1 at The Butcher's Arms.

O'Connor kept his cool to round keeper Paul Phillips and slot home from a tight angle with just 6 minutes to go.

The Bloods went into the game without a win all season and they were up against it for much of the first half - Ernie Cooksey and Craig McAllister both off target with headers for the visitors.

Donny Barnard then hit the post for Grays before Terry Fearns repeated the trick for the Bloods.

But Grays took the lead 9 minutes after the break when McAllister tapped in after good work from O'Connor.

Steve Daly headed home from six yards to level on 63 minutes before O'Connor settled it after some sloppy defending from the hosts.

A penalty apiece ensured Woking and Forest Green Rovers shared the points at Kingfield.

Woking looked on course for victory when Guiseppe Sole converted from the spot after 55 minutes after Anthony Tonkin fouled Goma Lambu.

But Stuart Fleetwood was fouled by Paul Lorraine 6 minutes from time and got up to score himself.

Rovers keeper Ryan Robinson was key to his side claiming a point, saving well from Matt Pattinson and and twice denying Sole a second.

Histon substitute Daniel Wright climbed off the bench to fire the Stutes to a 2-0 win and bring Salisbury City`s fine start to the season to a halt.

The young striker was only introduced with 13 minutes remaining but he was too hot to handle for the Whites defence.

He took just 3 minutes to break the deadlock when he headed home Craig Pope's cross.
And Wright sealed Histon's second win of the week 5 minutes from time when he got on the end of Erkan Okay's cross to slam the ball past Ryan Clarke.

But City only had themselves to blame for the defeat after missing a string of chances.
Prolific striker Matt Tubbs was denied by Mark Osborn and midfielder Darrell Clarke shot wide.

Cliff Akurang also had chances for the hosts but it was left to Wright to show them the way to goal.

Aaron Webster's second half strike earned Burton Albion a 1-1 draw at the Broadfield Stadium after Crawley Town missed a host of chances.

Guy Madjo gave the hosts a first half lead but wasteful Crawley failed to put the game beyond Burton's reach.

Crawley looked dangerous early on and Madjo twice went close before he turned the ball home from close range on 21 minutes after good work from Jamie Cook.

Daryl Clare then went close for injury-ravaged Burton before Madjo and Cook both had efforts cleared off the line.

Webster levelled just before the hour-mark when he headed Keith Gilroy's header on to the bar and reacted first to poke the ball home.

Striker James Constable hit a stunning hat-trick as Kidderminster Harriers blew away Exeter City 4-0 at Aggborough.

The 22-year-old fired Harriers into a first half lead before turning on the style after the break to stun the high-flying Grecians.

Constable opened the scoring after 27 minutes when he pounced on a loose ball to tap home from close range.

Russell Penn doubled the Harriers lead shortly before half time before Constable made sure of the result.

Constable got his second of the game in the 58th minute when he tucked away Justin Richards' inch perfect cross, before sliding home 3 minutes later to complete his treble.

Halifax Town substitute Steve Torpey kept his cool to convert a second half penalty to earn a 1-1 draw and end Oxford United`s 100 per cent home record at the Kassam Stadium.

Torpey had only been introduced in the 69th minute but within 5 minutes he was the penalty hero for the Shaymen.

Andy Campbell was tripped in the box by Michael Corcoran's desperate lunge and Torpey stepped up to cancel out Rob Duffy's opener.

After a goalless first period the match finally sprung into life 5 minutes after the break when Duffy broke the deadlock.

The former Rushden & Diamonds and Swansea striker was set free by debutant Paul Shaw and strode clear to slot in his first of the season.

Barry Quinn then had a second chalked off for a foul before Torpey levelled the match.
And it almost got worse for the home side when Lewis Killeen fired wide in the final 10 minutes.

Farsley Celtic scored twice in the last 6 minutes to stun struggling Northwich Victoria and snatch victory at Throstle Nest.

Paul Tait's neat header after good work by Mark Birch put Northwich in front after 22 minutes.

But Simeon Bambrook equalised from close range after he was played in by Roy Stamer.

And Farsley turned it around to leave Northwich still without a win this season when Tris Whitman scored from the edge of the area.
