Scunthorpe United have appointed Bury manager Alan Knill as their new boss.

The 46-year-old has signed a rolling contract at Glanford Park and is joined by Bury assistant manager Chris Brass and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

A statement on the official Bury website reads: "The club have reluctantly agreed a compensation package with Scunthorpe to take over the manager's role."

The Iron, who currently lie 23rd in the Championship, sacked former boss Ian Baraclough on 16 March and Knill leaves Gigg Lane after three years in charge with the Shakers sitting fourth in League Two.

The former Iron defender had been heavily linked with a move to East Yorkshire and on Thursday told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's flattering as they're a Championship team.

"Unfortunately, sometimes opportunities come along and you have to make decisions that aren't easy or popular."

Knill becomes Scunthorpe's third manager of the season following Baraclough and Nigel Adkins who moved to Southampton back in September.
