L2 News: No Excuse For 7-0 Hammering

Last updated : 15 September 2008 By Stray Shots Team

The Gills suffered their heaviest defeat for 47 years when they lost 7-0 away at Shrewsbury.

Not since losing 8-0 at the hands of Barrow in 1961 have Gillingham been on the receiving end of such a hiding, but they came within one goal of that horrendous scoreline at Shrewsbury.

The Shrews, one of the title favourites, alongside Gillingham, although the score suggests bookies ought to rethink that, put Gillingham to the sword with some deadly finishing.

It was manager Mark Stimson's worst defeat as a manager and no one is guaranteed a place in the boss's next team away at Aldershot.

He said: "There are no excuses, we weren't at the races from set pieces today. We started off nice and bright for the first 10-15 minutes and I thought it was going to be an attractive game but it wasn't to be.

"We have got to get over it and get on with it. Next week's team is up for grabs."

Gillingham were 4-0 down at half time and conceded a further three goals in the second half to slump to a demoralising defeat, a shocking result that came on the back of an impressive spell of three straight victories.

And the Gills did start brightly, having the better of it in the opening 20 minutes, and they might have taken a two-so goal lead. So what went wrong?

Stimson said: "Our strengths come from the two wide men hugging the touchline and feeding them the ball, but we didn't do that anywhere near enough today. There were some individual performances today that I was not expecting but hopefully they've all come at once and we will move on."
