Aldershot Town vs Stevenage

Last updated : 29 August 2010 By Mike Wray

Old acquaintances will be renewed this coming Saturday, when Graham Westley brings his Stevenage side to the EBB Stadium for the first time in two seasons. Both sides will be looking to gain the three points and, although it has been two years since the clubs have faced each other, both will be fully aware of the threat that each can cause.

The Shots go into the match sitting ninth in League Two with five points from their opening three fixtures; Stevenage are just one place behind them in tenth with four points having played the same amount out of games.

Speaking to The Shots Online ahead of the match, manager Kevin Dillon said: "I'm glad we're facing them [Steveange] early because they're playing with no fear at the moment.

"Teams that come up from the non-league come into games and really open up and they try and score more than the opposition, so it should be a great game."

Shots team news

The Shots will be keen to keep their unbeaten run going and more than eager to secure three vital home points as they begin a run of three important home fixtures in a week.

There is good news for John Halls [pictured left], who managed to get through a full 90 minutes during Tuesday's behind-closed-doors friendly defeat against Bristol City and is now certain to make the bench.

"I'm through it now and it's been a frustrating [being injured for so long], but it's all water under the bridge and hopefully I can crack onwards," Halls told The Shots Online.

"Hopefully, I can get back in the team and become a key figure for them. I'd like to be able to do that, but that's down to me to put in the hard work and to get back to how I know I can play. We've got a good squad here now, so it's not going to be easy to get back in this team given how well the players are doing. It's going to be a tough challenge, but we look a much stronger team than we did last year and that can only be good for the club."

While there is good news for Halls, Jack Randall continues to miss out with his fractured ankle injury and he has been joined this week by striker Reece Connolly, who has suffered a suspected broken hand. Aaron Morris could also be absent having picked up a slight strain ahead of his Welsh Under-21 International duties.

Other than that, Dillon is expected to be able to pick from a near-full squad and is likely to stick with the players and formation that have started the new season with good effect.

The opposition

Having won the Blue Square Premier title last season, Graham Westley's side have not started this campaign with all guns blazing but, as notorious 'slow starters', they've gained their first ever league victory last weekend with a convincing 3-1 home victory over Stockport County and they have been more than holding the the opening month of the season.

Speaking to the local media ahead of the match, Westley said: ''We've got more points after three games this season than we did last and we went on to have a very successful year, so I guess if that's a benchmark then that's something for us to think about.

"Our start has been alright in performance terms, but I'm sure we can produce better in terms of results and I'm sure as we learn, as we grow and as we develop, we will.'

"It is never an easy place to go [Aldershot], they're a very bright side.

"They've got some excellent quality. The lad [Glen] Little plays just in behind the front, he's ever such a good player. He's played at the top level for a reason: great quality, he understands the game and his movement is difficult to deal with. The mark of respect for him and for them as a team was Graham Turner being forced to change his formation at half-time last weekend to deal with that particular problem.

"They're a decent side, it's always a difficult place to visit. We're under no illusions about the size of the task and how difficult it'll be to win there."

Fitness doubts hang over Darren Murphy, who is recovering from a dislocated shoulder and Yemi Odubade, who went off injured against Bradford City and missed the club's victory against Stockport County last weekend.

David Bridges, however, is available having missed the last three games through suspension, while new signing Njazi Kuqi could also start having come on as a substitute during last weekends victory against County.

Popular former Shot striker Tim Sills is also expected to feature for the visitors.

Boro from: Ashley Bayes, Chris Day, Jon Ashton, Darius Charles, Luke Foster, Ronnie Henry, Scott Laird, Mark Roberts, Lawrie Wilson, Michael Bostwick, David Bridges, Joel Byrom, Stacy Long, John Mousinho, Darren Murphy, Robbie Sinclair, Peter Vincenti, Peter Winn, Chris Beardsley, Lee Boylan, Charlie Griffin, Yemi Odubade and Tim Sills.
