The game saw Shots boss Gary Waddock renewing old acquaintances, having played over 200 times for the north west Londoners from 1979 to 1986 and managed them in 2006.
The bulk of Waddock's 16 contracted players started the game, with Anthony Straker and Danny Hylton on the bench. Ex-Southend United defender Che Wilson began at right back, whilst Andy Sandell occupied an unfamiliar left back role in a 4-2-3-1 formation used to great effect by Waddock in the final game of last season at Lincoln City.
The visitors, buoyed by 947 travelling fans and sporting a new kit with virtually impossible to read white numbers, had the better of the opening exchanges. The lively Wayne Routledge, especially, was causing Sandell all sorts of problems down the right wing.
