A bright start was rewarded after eight minutes when Danny Rose found Tomas Pekhart out wide and the Czech striker crossed low for David Hutton to sweep home in style.
Eight minutes later The Shots created a chance of their own, but a Ben Harding cross was put wide by Chris Blackburn.
Five minutes later Pekhart grabbed the visitors second when Nikki Bull fumbled a John Bostock effort and Pekhart was on hand to tap in the rebound.
On thirty-minutes, the lively Andy Barcham drilling past Bull from the edge of the area to give Clive Allen's men a deserved 3-0 advantage, but minutes later Danny Hylton skipped around David Button and created a brilliant goal scoring opportunity, only to strike the upright from a tight angle.
A number of substitutions affected the flow of the game in the second half and it took until past the hour mark for the first shot of note as Louie Soares hit his effort straight at Button.
Hutton and Bostock went close before the home side bagged a consolation goal, Hylton capitalising when Button failed to gather in Jumo Thomas' deep cross, enabling the striker to fire home from close range to give the home side something to cheer about.
Team line-ups to follow.
