Antwi Joins Shots Exodus

Will Antwi has become the latest player to make his exit from the Recreation Ground leaving boss Terry Brown with just six players so far staying on at the club for summer training, writes Aldershot News reporter Rebekah Wheller.

The 22-year-old had been placed on the transfer list mid-way through the season, but then came back into the side and impressed as a centre back, thus attracting the interest of several league clubs.

Since the season came to an end at Carlisle on May 6, Antwi has been training with John Gorman and his Wycombe Wanderers side and eventually signed a deal on Tuesday to stay on with the Chairboys for the next two years.

In his first interview after leaving the club, Antwi said: “It's a good move for me, it's a step in the right direction at the right time.

Although I was on the transfer list I never really lost belief in myself, I've got good foundations from my early training and even if I don't play well I know it's only temporary.

“You never know what's going to happen in football, at the start of the season I was hoping to do well but that didn't work out. Then I was on the transfer list looking at going to a Conference South club or something, but by the end of the season I'm moving to a league club!”

The former Crystal Palace trainee insists he opted to join Wycombe to improve himself as a player — and is NOT a move motivated by money.

“I wish, I'd be laughing if it was! It's not about money, if I wanted more money I would have stayed at Aldershot, it's about improving myself and being the best player that I can be.

“At this age you can't play for security, you just want to play football at the highest level you can. Wycombe invited me down for training to see if I liked it, and meet the boys and see how I felt and I want to play league football,” added Antwi.

At Wycombe there is one familiar face in Jonny Dixon, although Gorman has added another striker to his squad this week in Tommy Mooney – but Antwi believes this is where Aldershot were lacking.

“It's always good to have weapons, and I think that's something that we lacked. For a while it was just Tim Sills up front on his own, you can never have enough weapons.”

After a season that ended in disappointment for the Shots at Brunton Park, after their Play-Off semi-final defeat, Antwi says he always enjoyed his time at Aldershot Town.

“One thing I will miss is the boys, we've all bonded really well and I've got to know everyone. It made me really sad about leaving because even when we lost the semi-final I knew then that Terry [Brown] was going to find it hard to keep the squad together.

“It took us virtually all season to bond, at the start we were all individuals. All the people at the club and the fans are great and I respect Terry Brown a lot. People might see me and think I look all straight-faced and serious but I've had such a good laugh, it's an experience I wouldn't change.”
