The former Shots youth player grabbed a goal in each half to spare Aldershot's reputation and gives Terry Brown's men a fighting chance of making the Final which is to be played at Bournemouth's Dean Court - which should give supporters something to smile about if the play off dream collapses.
The Shots did show some character with their fight back with loanee Jake Robinson coming close to winning a couple of times late on in the game.
With the Shots defence all at sea for much of the match it was down to Nikki Bull to keep the scoreline down and he made several great saves to keep the Conference South club at bay.
The Shots first goal came from a header by Brett Johnson which appeared to bounced up onto the underside of the crossbar before Rendell dived in to make sure it had crossed the line.
Rendell's second goal was a volley from outside the box which looped over the Blues keeper - Tarr, who was some way off his line.
The match was overshadowed however following the death of a Shots supporter who has been named as Clarrie Denyer.
Clarrie collapsed and died of a heart attack at the ground prior to the match despite the best efforts of the physio and staff at the Camrose.
In an open message on Shotsweb from Clarrie's son-in-law Chris Stewart, he thanked everybody who tried to assist.
It's hoped that the club will arrange a minutes silence prior to the second leg at the Recreation Ground.
We here at aldershottown-mad.co.uk offer our sympathy to all family and friends.
