Under-pressure Shots boss Terry Brown is calling on his troops to lift spirits around the Rec and kick-off Aldershot Town's season in earnest, with victory over high-fliers Stevenage Borough.
The Aldershot News has reported that Brown's men have spent a week largely behind closed doors as inquests over Saturday's dismal 5-2 defeat at Morecambe came and went.
Now however, there's a new sense of determination around the home dressing room as the Shots aim to haul themselves off the bottom of the Conference table at the expense of Graham Westley's men.
After having to endure 90 minutes watching the video nasty of Christie Park on Monday, inspirational skipper Steve Watson pulled the squad aside for a team bonding discussion, before Brown spoke frankly to each one.
The boss explained: "I wanted them to have a miserable weekend after Morecambe, like I had a miserable weekend.
"We spoke about the game at length on Monday on ways we can improve and the expectancy on the players to perform.
"It was a good session and we have all come out of it feeling positive and looking forward to the game on Saturday."
As a result of that session, the Shots are now pumped up and ready to go for the weekend — and Westley looks to be just the man to take their frustrations out on.
The supremely-confident ex-Farnborough Town chief is there to be shot at by most of the Conference front-runners these days it seems, after speaking out publicly in the summer about his Stevenage side being the best side in the division.
They come to the Rec on Saturday fourth in the table and on a run of 10 points from a possible 12.
One thing's for sure, the Shots will know they've been in a battle.
The good news for Brown this week though is that his high-flying opponents have a defensive crisis, with two of their first choice centre halves suspended and another struggling with injury.
Skipper Jason Goodliffe sits out for the third and final game after being sent off at Crawley, while Ronnie Henry joins him up in the stands having being dismissed in the 0-0 draw with Hereford United on Saturday.
Matt Hocking limped out of Saturday's game and faces a race to be fit for the weekend, while striker Dino Maamria completes the suspended trio following his red card at Woking.
Westley is set to re-shuffle his troops in the hope of repeating the 1-0 win at the Rec back in March, with Barry Laker expected to partner Rob Quinn in a new-look defence.
Stevenage's threat undoubtedly comes from the attacking third where in Anthony Elding and Darryn Stamp, they have one of the most feared striker partnerships in the Conference.
Interestingly, Brown claimed after the Morecambe game on Saturday that in Tim Sills and Chris McPhee he too has as good as any Conference strike-forces have to offer — Saturday would be a great test of that theory.
The Shots boss continued: "Graham (Westley) has done very well at Stevenage, getting them to the Play-Off final last year. His teams are always very fit, have plenty of strength and in Elding and Stamp have one of the best front-running partnerships in the league.
"Our games have been tight in the past, but after enjoying a good start, they'll be coming to the Rec full of confidence.
"If we approach it in the same way we did the Crawley game, however, then it is one which we can get something out of."
With thanks to the Aldershot News.
