Brown Looks To Fledglings

TERRY Brown has hit out in the Aldershot News at senior professionals for letting him down, while hailing his latest batch of young triallists who have put “a twinkle” in his eye.

The Shots boss was full of praise for his new recruits who lifted the mood at the Rec by conjuring up the first victory of the summer against Football League opposition.

But, at the same time, Brown expressed his disappointment at the higher-profile names that have not made his job easy during a time of unrest.

Despite it being such early days, the boss was starting to come under pressure from a section of fans, who were worried about a lack of numbers in the first team squad and Brown's choice of replacements seemingly not catching the eye.

But come 10pm yesterday that doom and gloom turned to optimism as Brown's timely move into the transfer market began to take shape.

The boss said: “I'm bringing in senior pros from big clubs and thinking ‘yeah great' but the only thing that's put a twinkle in my eye is the young boys coming out.

“None of the pros that have come in have really impressed me whereas the young lads we brought in tonight not only looked hungry to play football, but could play, giving us pace and ability on the ball.

“But without wanting to name names at this stage, I would say that six of them did absolutely brilliantly for us.

“We all had to introduce each other in the dressing room before the game and naturally it took us a while to get going. Visually, not even I knew half the side.

“There were loads of plusses out there tonight but I will re-iterate that you can't get too carried away over a pre-season friendly whether it be a plus or a minus.”

One thing's for sure, the Rec revolving door was working overtime this week as Brown and his assistant Martin Kuhl tried to put their plan into action.

Out went full back Sekani Simpson, who joined Forest Green Rovers and Matt Somner, who made a brief Rec return on Tuesday night — in a Bristol Rovers shirt.

However, in came a cluster a eager beavers, desperate for the chance to represent the Shots at this level and winning their way into Brown's pre-season thoughts.

Former Wigan player Hussain Suleman, recommended to the club by Brown's Premiership protégé Jason Roberts and ex-England striker Cyrille Regis, impressed at right back, while ex-QPR squad member Lewis Hamilton, who can play anywhere across the back, did likewise on the left.

They were joined in the side by German striker Dirk Lehmann, formerly of Fulham, Brighton and Motherwell, who flew in from Belgium especially to try out and partner the former Southend, Boston and Oxford hit-man Mark Rawle up front.

Exciting young left winger James Cook from Maidenhead United was given his first run-out of the summer, while Macedonian international Arben Imani, Australian Nick Stavrukos and French keeper Michele were also handed starts in a Shots line-up which had more than a hint of international flavour.

Ex-Canvey Island and Farnborough frontman Bertie Brayley, Yeovil striker Kezie Ibe and Brentford wide man Steve McNamara made up the squad from the bench.
