Brown Set To Sign A Reliant Robin?

The Aldershot News reporter, Rebekah Wheller has reported that Terry Brown has made his first step in bolstering his back-line for the new season by making a move for former Cheltenham Town defender John Brough.

The 32-year-old who has made over 130 appearances for the Robins, was set to sign for the Shots on Wednesday but final contract details are being ironed out as the impressive defender has caught the eye of several other clubs, meaning Brown faces an intensive battle in bringing his man to the Recreation Ground.

With the departure of Will Antwi and the retirement of Ray Warburton, Brown has been focusing his search on a centre-half — especially with the future of highly-rated Brett Johnson up in the air.

Brown also stated last week that his squad set-up needed an experienced performer to fill the mighty boots of Captain Marvel Warburton.

Brough has an established League record, having made 27 appearances for the Robins this season, and also playing for Hereford United from 1994 to 1998 during their tenure in the Football League.
The 6ft defender also spent two seasons at Shrewsbury Town after starting out at Notts County as a trainee.

Talking about next season, defender Darren Barnard told the local paper, “We're looking for automatic promotion this year, I've never been part of a championship-winning side before and that's my ambition. We've got the right nucleus and if Terry [Brown] can add a bit of quality there's no reason why we won't be up there.

“New people come in all the time, with Will going and Warbs retiring and no-one knowing what's going on with Brett [Johnson], it's part and parcel of football,” added Barnard.

Influential midfielder David Lee is also said to have agreed terms and will sign his contract when he returns from his holiday.

Skipper Steve Watson now remains the only player to agree terms with the Shots although the intended signing of Brough and the re-signing of Lee and Barnard should go some way in helping him make his decision.

Assistant boss Martin Kuhl is holding the fort with Terry Brown away until Monday, but says he has been continuing talks with prospective players.

“It's a bit difficult at the moment with Terry away and the Chairman only just returning from his holiday. Terry will be speaking to Steve [Watson] when he returns from his holiday and having a chat with him and it's up to us to show players how much the club is prepared to do to get us promoted.

“We've spoken to a couple of players and shown them round and they've all been very impressed with our facilities which is good news. We've got to make sure we are replacing the players we have let go with quality,” added Kuhl.

For everyone at the club, the aim for next season is clear — promotion, and automatic promotion at that.

“We've been just that far away for the last two seasons, and last year was really a bit of a failure as we didn't improve on the previous year. We want to go one step further, and the squad that we had at the end of the season was stronger than the one at the start.

“We're looking to get established players, and while some of them are still trying to get big wages there will come a time when they realise clubs are cutting their wage bills and we might be able to step in then,” added Kuhl.
