Delay In Dixon Deal

The Aldershot News spoke to Terry Brown earlier this week when he confirmed that the club had submitted an £8,000 bid for the 21-year-old striker but is now concerned that the move could be placed on hold.

Brown told the News that the transfer now hangs in the balance as the new manager may wish to keep Dixon on Wycombe's books.

He told the paper, “I have a target man in Marcus Gayle and in John Grant I have someone who will run the channels and work hard, while we also have Ryan Williams and Louie Soares on board too,” he said.

“However, what I really need now is a striker who will get me 20+ goals a season. The others will all weigh in with their fair share but I feel we need someone like Jonny in the side.

“We have 13 players in the squad and if we can get in four more and a few quality young players then I'll be very happy.”

The Shots manager denied any interest in Farnborough striker Michael Charles, declaring that Dixon is his number one target to lead the Shots' new three-pronged attack for the new season.

Brown also admitted he is 99% certain that he will be able to parade a new top class defender when the Shots begin their pre-season programme against QPR this Saturday.

At the time of going to press, the new signing had not been announced but the Aldershot manager said he was as confident as can be that the new man will have put pen to paper by the weekend.

The club are believed to have missed out on experienced duo Adie Williams and Eddie Hutchinson, who signed for other clubs last week, but Brown said the Shots' faithful will be delighted with the new mystery signing.

“He's a quality centre half with more than 100 Football League games to his name," he said. "He's tall, athletic and strong in the air, with league experience and I am 99% sure he will have signed by the weekend.

“As I've signed Marcus Gayle, who can fill in at the back, and have young Dave Winfield as well, I'll be aiming to bring in one more centre half after that and I have a couple of names in mind.

“It's been tough because we've probably spoken to seven or eight centre halves this summer but if they're fixed up with a good contract at a league club then they're more than likely to choose to move there.

“Having said that, I will be delighted if we can bring in this guy and I'm sure he'll be a great addition to the squad.

“My primary aim is to use Marcus Gayle as a target man but if and when it is necessary, he can also play at centre back. I'm also looking to bring in a central midfielder before the start of the season.

“I have to say it's been a tough summer for us, very hard work," Brown added. "We started looking at players two months before anyone else and we were ringing on doorbells during the play-offs.

“It's been much tougher than I thought but we have got in some high calibre players and it is hard to do that. I'm pleased with the way the squad is shaping up now.”
