Grant To Head Back Up North

The BBC have reported that Aldershot Town striker John Grant, has hinted that could turn his back on professional football next summer.

"I think it'll be my last season here if I'm being honest," the Manchester-born striker told BBC Surrey.

"Hopefully I'll leave it on a high. This is my fourth year, time to get back up north."

Grant, 28, scored 48 goals in 133 games in his first three seasons for the Shots, but he has not yet started a game this season.

"You do the training," said Grant. "And you want the prize of playing in the first team at the end of the week.

"There's no prize at the moment but I can't take it too personally. There are other people in the team as well who are going through the same pain that I'm going through.

"It just shows that you care that you want to play."

Grant has said that he wants to move into youth work and spend more time with his family, which still leaves the door open for non-league football next season.

Grant, who started his career as a 16-year-old at Crewe, had loan spells with Rushden and Diamonds and Northwich Victoria during his four years at Gresty Road, before signing for Hereford United in June 2002.

After a season at Edgar Street, he spent the 2003/04 campaign at Telford United before moving on to their Shropshire neighbours Shrewsbury Town.

And, after leaving the Gay Meadow in March 2005, he spent 14 months back up north with at Halifax Town before joining Aldershot in July 2006.
