The Aldershot News have reported that Terry Brown's raid on the transfer market paid off on Wednesday as he bolstered his squad with a hat-trick of signings with Northampton Town striker Matthew Gearing, former Barnet and Leyton Orient defender Greg Heald, and Bristol Rovers winger Ryan Williams all joining the Rec ranks.
The Shots boss endured a day of frantic phonecalls in a bid to beef up his struggling side and hoist the club off the foot of the Conference table.
Frontman Gearing joins from the Cobblers scholarship scheme, but the Shots have the option of keeping the youngster for the season.
"He's a lively, quick little striker in the mould of Jake Robinson. I've watched him play in a couple of games and he did really well so that boosts my squad up front," said Brown.
The boss has also signed Heald, who should prove to be a crucial addition at the back with the transfer listing of Tobi Jinadu, and Scott Guyett openly stating that he does not want to extend his loan from Yeovil with the Shots.
Heald, 33, was released by Rochdale at the end of last season having made 39 appearances for the side, and signed for York City at the beginning of July. However in a move that infuriated City boss Billy McEwan the defender made a dramatic U-turn just two days later and left the club.
With a wealth of league experience under his belt, Heald will no doubt be a welcome addition to the squad, and with fellow newcomer John Brough alongside him, there'll certainly be no shortage of know-how in the back line.
"We tried to get Heald last year but he went to Rochdale, he is moving down to the south and spoke to us straight away about coming to play. He's a big strong defender and he's also good at getting a couple of goals as well," said assistant boss Martin Kuhl.
Wing-man Williams, 27, joins from the Gas, having made almost 200 appearances for the League Two side, on a month's loan, and spent last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers. Williams was instrumental in the Christmas double header last year against the Shots.
With the transfer window deadline looming as the News went to press, Brown was busy attending games with Kuhl, starting with a trip to Reading to watch their reserves beat Millwall 3-1.
One who may have caught the eye of Brown, was Ian Wright's 18-year-old son Brett, playing for the Royals, as well as former Tottenham youth teamer Pierre Joseph-Dubois.
With further games to watch as the News went to press on Wednesday night, Brown was still unsure whether there would be any further additions to his strike force.
"We've been looking at strikers, I want someone up front, but it's difficult with the movement going on, clubs want to keep four quality strikers.
"I will be on the phone literally until midnight, it wouldn't be a surprise if we get someone in, but equally I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't," added Brown.
But the boss is still confident that even if they don't bring in a permanent name to add to the teamsheet for the season, they will once again turn to loans.
"We're still able to go out and get players and bring them in on loan, so it's not a case of if we don't get anyone in by the deadline we're in trouble, we're looking at long-term deals as well," added Brown.
The new signings are expected to make their debuts in Monday night's Sky Sports clash with fellow basement boys Crawley, in whom the Shots take on a side in a similar predicament.
Francis Vines' men only scored their first goal on Saturday in their 2-1 defeat at home to Stevenage and despite having gone full-time over the summer, and with a new board at the helm, they too haven't got off to the best of starts.
With one extra draw under their belts they currently sit one point ahead of the Shots at the foot of the table.
The Shots had mixed results against the promoted Crawley side last season, losing 1-0 at the Broadfield Stadium before winning by the same score at the Recreation Ground eight months later — Darren Barnard with the winning goal.
Barnard, however, will be one of the faces missing in Monday night's game, as he was due to see a specialist on Wednesday. Also missing will be Gary Holloway, who has earmarked the Morecambe trip as a possible return.
With the week off between fixtures, those with knocks should have shaken them off for the visit of Crawley in front of the Sky cameras, while recovering first teamers such as Steve Watson will have had the time to recuperate after two 90-minute games in three days.
Tim Sills is hoping to overcome a whiplash-type injury to his neck, and was also seeing a specialist about his foot on Wednesday.
With the revolving door firmly back in action at the Rec, this week also saw the departure of striker Bertie Brayley. He had his month long deal extended by a week to act as cover over the Bank Holiday Monday but failed to earn a permanent contract at the Rec.
Bertrand Cozic has also mysteriously left the club after playing in two games, at Halifax and at home to Altrincham.
Jermaine Brown has also left the club while former Arsenal midfielder Michael Gordon is still with the club on non-contract terms.
As Brown continues his struggle to get his side in order, and slowly ticks players off the injury list, he is still searching for that elusive win, a dogged second half performance at Grays was not enough for the Shots to secure a point.
Goals either side of the break from Glenn Poole and Tony Battersby put Grays in control, before Brown switched things around and suddenly the Shots looked a different prospect.
Nick Crittenden halved the deficit with an effort from close range but luck was against the Shots on the day with Brown pointing to a very strong penalty appeal, for a foul on Chris McPhee being turned down, and a header by the same player being ruled out amid claims it had crossed the line.
