Key To Exeter Cracker

Exeter City skipper Glenn Cronin has revealed the secret behind the Grecians' stunning Boxing Day success - playing like an away team.

Conference promotion hopefuls City have struggled on occasions to replicate their imperious away form when they return to their packed St James's Park home.

They went into Monday's 4-0 thrashing of in-form Aldershot Town with six points less from their home games than they had from their fruitful showings on the road.

But all that was forgotten as the Grecians blew away the lacklustre Shots in front of a crowd of almost 5,000 people thanks to goals from Paul Buckle, Billy Jones, Jon Challinor and striker Lee Phillips.

And Cronin, who formed a formidable central midfield barrier with player-assistant manager Buckle, singled out manager Alex Inglethorpe's meticulous preparation work as a key factor in their triumph.

Inglethorpe tried to change the way his players approached the game in front of their own fans - and the City faithful were treated to their team's best home performance of the season.

"We worked very hard in the week building up to the Aldershot match," Cronin explained.

"We looked at the way we approached the game and it certainly paid off.

"We worked on our shape and the way we need to play at home. We want to try to counter-attack teams because when we've brought the game to the opposition it's not really worked.

"Away from home we have been very good at sitting back and catching teams on the break. I think bringing that back home will help us a lot.

"It was great against Aldershot because everyone on the pitch knew their jobs and all the work we did came off straight away.

"We definitely expected to win the match, but we weren't expecting four goals and that's all down to the hard work that was put in."

Exeter went into the Aldershot game facing a daunting run of seven consecutive games against sides challenging for promotion into the Football League.

And, despite making a great start with Monday's victory, Cronin insisted the players were not taking anything for granted - especially as they face the challenge of Hereford United in front of the Sky cameras at St James's Park on Friday.

"We managed to work hard on Monday and get the result, but we will have to work even harder to get that going again next time," he said.

"We need to get that work-rate right again because that's what got us the result. If everyone works hard, hopefully the rest will follow.

"It's looking good for us in the league, but all we can do is keep winning. It's still early days and we're happy with where we are.

"And if we keep winning, then other results will eventually go our way and we will have a great chance of going up."

The 24-year-old Cronin has been a regular in the Exeter side this season after recovering from a serious knee injury. The Grecians youth academy product admitted it has taken him a while to settle back into action, but he is continuing to improve with every game.

"I feel fit and, while it's not been going great, I feel I've been okay personally," he said.

"Each game feels like I'm getting a bit better and I'm finding out something different each time. I knew it would take time to get back to my best, but the manager spoke to me about that and I just have to give my best every game."
