Last Chance Saloon For Terry's Young Guns

With their opponents having just secured Conference football for another year, the Aldershot boss said he expects a lively game at Haig Avenue in a party atmosphere — but insists it is important to finish off the season on a high.

The Shots are still without injured duo Steve Watson and David Lee and Brown will be using the match to run the rule over some of his younger players to see if they have got what it takes to push on next year.

He told the paper, “The fact Southport are safe now should have a very positive impact on Saturday's match. They've had the prospect of relegation haunting them most of the year but now that's gone they can go out there and enjoy themselves.

“It should be a bit of a party atmosphere. It's a nice pitch and the weather is looking good so I am looking forward to the game.

“It's important for us to win so we can finish in the top 12 and qualify for the LDV Vans Trophy next year. Longer term though, it's important that the youngsters have a run out and crucial for some of the others to prove they want to stay on at Aldershot.

“It is the last chance for many of them to show me they are ready to play for a promotion-chasing team next year and I hope they will prove to me what they have got.”

The manager has confirmed that Mazin Ahmed, Ryan Crockford and Dave Winfield will all start the match and all three will be desperate to prove their worth to Brown in this end-of-season encounter.

After a disappointing campaign, the boss is looking forward to seeing the back of the season and starting the rebuilding process.

“Most of my decisions have been made already for next season and there will be substantial movements in and out of the club this summer,” Brown said.

“I have been to more games in the last two months than ever before in my life. We have earmarked at least 20 people we will be having talks with in the next two weeks. We are hoping to put as many to bed in May as possible.

“This season has never really got going. It started poorly and we were chasing tails for the rest of the season really. I'll be glad when it's over. It's time for us to build a new team at the club but I want us to finish on a high against Southport on Saturday.”
