Boss Terry Brown spoke to the Aldershot News about his hunt for new players, saying: “I think we're probably looking at two centre halves whereas I've always been looking for one.
“We had a very young pairing at the back recently and I want a Ray Warburton-type defender, that is an absolute must for us.
“Brett still has to make up his mind, but we wish him well whether he chooses to stay with us or move on. I'm disappointed to lose Will as he performed very well in the last few months, our loss is Wycombe's gain and we wish him all the best.”
Brown also clarified the issue of whether the club would be receiving any sort of compensation for the defender: “Will had it written into his contract that there would be no fee involved for him. He was always going to move on, but it says that in his contract so the club won't get any fee for him.”
The boss has been continuing talks with two centre backs but admitted it was unlikely that any new signings would be unveiled before the end of this week.
“Talks are always on-going because I want to make sure that the players I'm signing are 100% fit, and it's easier to do that in July than it is now.
“There are hundreds of centre halves, I'm more concerned with our striking power than the defence. We have still got a very good right-back and a very good goal-keeper,” added Brown.
As the boss looks to bring in a couple of defenders he maintains he is not taking his eye off matters at the front of the park, including a certain Jonny Dixon over at the Causeway Stadium.
“I've got a list of about eight strikers that I'm looking at but some of these have got trials at League clubs. We wouldn't rule out a return for Jonny Dixon, especially seeing as John Gorman has brought in about 14 strikers, including Mooney who is a very good striker.
“Loans can be complicated so it's not just as simple as bringing him here for a season. You can look at our loans last season in two ways, good in that Dixon and Jake Robinson helped us get to the Play-Offs but absolutely useless when we needed them in the Play-Offs.
“I'd rather sign players than bring in loans,” added Brown.
Talks will also continue between the club and left-back Darren Barnard and midfielders Steve Watson and David Lee.
Brown said: “I want to tie up the deals by the end of the week. The chairman will be back from his holiday by then so hopefully we can sort out all three.”
The 26-year-old joined the Shots from Eastleigh in the summer but the former Southampton player spent the last few months of the season on loan to Eastbourne Borough.
