Alongside fellow new boy Marcus Gayle, Newman helped guide the Bees to the play-offs, but decided to leave the club when his contract expired on July 31.
After a series of impressive triallist displays for the Shots in pre-season manager Terry Brown acted swiftly to tie up a deal for the experienced star and officially announced it on Tuesday.
He said: “Ricky's signing is great news — he's a real battler and organiser who'll certainly stand up to be counted.
“He was just the kind of player that I was looking for in pre-season and I'm delighted that he has signed.
“He proved his sort at Dorchester on Saturday when he got the game by the scruff of the neck after we were struggling a bit early on and that is the kind of inspiration that we'll need during the season.”
This latest addition means that, with Gayle up front and Andy Edwards at the back, Brown will have an experienced spine to his side.
“Going back to Bill Shankly's days, if you get the spine right and the two centre halves right you're halfway there,” the boss added.
“If you get a holding centre midfielder that can talk and organise, and a target man like Marcus Gayle in the side, then anyone would be happy and I certainly am.”
Newman also revealed his delight at signing for the Shots at such an exciting time for the club.
“Obviously I've been down here for the last three or four games and I like it here and the management seem to like me, so I'm really pleased to have signed,” he said.
“It's a fantastic set-up here, with a great pitch and stadium, and everything is geared up to go back into the Football League. With a lot of new players in it's clearly a club that's going places.
“Pre-season has gone very well for us. It's all about fitness and performance, and while results aren't that important it does obviously breed confidence. The fans can see there's a good team spirit and we're all looking forward to it starting now.”
