Shots 0 - 2 Farnborough Town

Given the contrasting fortunes of these Rushmoor neighbours over the years, surely not even the most die-hard of Aldershot Town fan would deny Farnborough the bragging rights to this?

Those cheering from the red and white side of the borough haven't had much to crow about for ages it seems, but although this was only a very early pre-season friendly, it was still against their biggest rivals and it must have tasted good.

With the season's start still five weeks away, crowds clicked back through the turnstiles somewhat earlier then usual — but it was all in a good cause.

Dignitaries, former players and fans congregated at the Rec not only to get a first glimpse of the big two in action, but also to show appreciation for match beneficiary, Charlie Mortimore.

As president of Farnborough and ex-Aldershot player, Charlie revelled in his win-win situation and deservedly so.

Though very little is decided or learned at this very early stage of the summer, both managers went away from the Rec on Saturday night with something extra to ponder.

While Boro boss Frank Gray can feel suitably impressed with his first match in charge, his Shots counterpart Terry Brown was left red-faced — blaming himself for the performance and subsequent defeat which didn't exactly go down well with the home faithful.

Brown said: "Ordinarily, I'd be looking at that game and I'd be seething with the performance of my players, but I'm not seething, I'm annoyed with myself for allowing us to be playing this early.

"It's the ninth of July for heaven's sake and I want to get them fit for the 13th of August. I've got too many pre-season games and I'm going to have to judge carefully how we play it.

"If there is a lesson I have learned is that I will never ever get talked into a game this early. I've picked injuries up that I didn't need and it was quite obvious that we were nowhere near ready for a game of football. It's my fault, not there's."

Lacking cohesion and ideas, the patched-up Shots were deservedly beaten by a Boro side, who looked anything but.

Just how much Boro fans can read into this remains to be seen, but with Paul Harkness finally signing on the dotted line to partner Carl Gibbs up front, suddenly Boro look a serious threat going forward.

Boss Gray, however, is a wily campaigner and will not be getting carried away.

"It's always nice to win games," he said. "But at this stage of the season it's about keeping fitness levels up, so it was nice to see they lasted the game well.

"On a surface like this you should be playing a passing game and that is what I'm trying to instil. I thought we did that well today and caused them problems up front also.

"I learnt today that we have a good group of lads here with a good attitude and spirit. Once you've got that then you've got a chance."

As is usual in pre-season, both sides named unfamiliar line-ups with the Shots in particular, looking almost unrecognisable.

With Nikki Bull, Darren Barnard, Tim Sills, Gary Holloway and Steve Watson all out injured, Brown fielded only five of his regulars with one of those, John Brough, making his debut.

Brown's strike force was made up entirely of trialists with Chris Senior — who scored twice against the Shots for Scarborough last season —the best known.

He was joined by ex-Canvey Island and Farnborough striker Bertie Brayley and Graham Evans, a Welshman introduced to the club by Darren Barnard.

Also hoping to catch the eye was full back Michael Barima from Yeading, right-sided midfielder Greg Robinson from Worthing, ex-Shots striker Jamie Taylor and Macedonian international Arben Imani, who lasted just 28 minutes before asked to be substituted by referee Andy Woodruf for showing just a bit too much endeavour.

Farnborough, on the other hand, had more squad issues resolved than the Shots with Gray looking to add the last few touches to the backbone he's already assembled.

Newest recruits Harkness and Ben Townsend took their place in the line-up alongside Jay Gasson and ex-Shot Ty Smith, while fellow new boys Matt Warner and Kevin Scriven started on the bench.

Gray's biggest decision surrounding his two striking substitutes, who both impressed in brief forays. Warren McBean played against Boro for Barnet last season, while Godfrey Karikari is a Ghanaian under 19 international looking to settle in England. Neither did their chances any harm.

Boro should have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when Harkness was put through by Ty Smith only to shoot at the legs of keeper Andy Glasspool.

But on 23 minutes they finally made it count when Steve Laidler put Gibbs through in a near exact situation — the Boro striker making no mistake this time in rounding Glasspool and slotting home into an empty net.

It got worse for the Shots on 38 minutes when rampant Boro doubled their lead. Ty Smith floated over a corner from the left and after a brief goalmouth melee, his namesake Jay, playing in a new centre back role, bundled the ball home at the far post.

As a result of that melee, Glasspool suffered what looked like a broken nose and was replaced by youth teamer Ben Lauder-Dykes.

Harkness then missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 before the break — firing against the top of the crossbar after Gibbs had laid off Townsend's cross.

Aldershot, though, did have chances to put a smile of Browns' face, although Senior and Evans were trying a little too hard possibly in a bid to impress. Evans slipped at the vital moment when given space to shoot 12 yards out, while Brayley's volleyed effort flew just wide.

The usual flow of substitutions — including the entire Shots youth team set-up stopped the flow of the game although Tobi Jinadu came close to pulling a goal back, only to see his far post header cleared off the line by Jay Smith.

Shots youngster Luke Walker then produced a fine save from Boro's new keeper Kevin Scriven, while McBean almost capped his trial debut with a goal for the visitors, smashing high over the bar when Ty Smith had played him clean through.
