Shots 0 - 4 Tottenham XI

Every so often a pre-season game comes along that really lives up to the excitement of a friendly, and Sunday was one of those games, as Tottenham boss Martin Jol brought a host of first-team stars to the Recreation Ground.

Fans were treated to watching Spurs stars Robbie Keane, Fredi Kanoute and Michael Carrick in action as Jol himself watched from the sidelines.

Spurs' superior skill and fitness told in their 4-0 defeat of the Shots, but in truth the home side acquitted themselves well against their Premiership opponents, going close to getting on the scoreboard on several occasions themselves.

Jol said: “Aldershot created three or four 100% chances and that's what happens if you're not sharp enough, you have to do a better job if you play against Aldershot, so it was useful for me to see that.

“Aldershot were a good team to play and they wanted to play, especially in the first half, when they tried to put pressure on us.”

Leading by just two goals at half-time, the Spurs boss felt that they should have won by a larger margin.

“We should have scored more in the first half and done a more professional job but we didn't do that. Still it was good for me to be able to see them all play and make an assessment.

“Aldershot were a good club in the past and they're trying to come back. They have one of the best pitches I've seen at this level so you can play nice football but it's not just about nice football you have to score goals,” added Jol.

And it's the player that will score goals that boss Terry Brown is still lacking, although the Shots had their own efforts as Michael Alexis and Bertie Brayley both went close.

But for Brown, whilst most fans delighted in seeing some Premiership stars, the boss was disappointed he wasn't able to enthral his own fans with quality signings.

“I've a tinge of disappointment that we're not able to put out a stronger team and really give these teams a run for their money and to give our crowd a thriller. We worked hard and looked quite dangerous in the first half, I thought we got some good crosses in and could have scored.

“If I look at my pre-season as a whole I've been very disappointed with it as we haven't been able to field strong enough sides.”

Brown once again raided the transfer market with three triallists making debuts, former Crystal Palace defender Jay Conroy came in at centre back, while former Ispwich and Canvey Island striker Neil Midgley partnered Bertie Brayley up front. Also on show was a left winger named only as Gary Med, whom Brown was hoping to sign on Monday as the Mail went to press.

With just four minutes gone Mounir El-Hamdaoui went for goal but keeper Nikki Bull, back from his knee operation, blocked with his feet before pouncing on the loose ball.

And it was a taste of things to come as Bull was again called on to clear from Keane, for the Shots broke forward as Michael Alexis nodded just wide.

Med delivered a superb ball into the area but Alexis couldn't get a head on it as Spurs scrambled to clear the danger.

Bull blocked from Dean Marney while Keane should have opened the scoring but mis-directed his header, as Kanoute fired over from Carrick's corner.

Then on 19 minutes it looked as though the Shots were about to take an unexpected lead, when another quality delivery from Med was nodded down by Midgley but Alexis blasted over the bar from close range.

Just a minute later Spurs took the rather more expected lead as Kanoute's ball across the area picked out El-Hamdaoui who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

Bull forced Carrick's shot onto the post, as Keane continued to threaten and with half-time looming Spurs mounted another attack. Bull blocking well from Carrick low down before making a fine reaction save to tip El-Hamdaoui's effort over the bar.

From Carrick's whipped in corner Bull made yet another fine block to deny Michael Dawson, but was powerless to stop Davenport smashing the rebound into the roof of the net.

Kanoute went close again, Bull deflecting his shot onto the opposite post that kept Carrick out earlier.

For the Shots Nick Crittenden made a surging run and crossed in but Midgey's glancing header was wide, as Martin Fulop collected from Brayley's weak effort.

The second half became a rather more subdued affair with Brown making several substitutions.

Spurs earned their third goal on 68 minutes as Carrick's effort hit Shots triallist Patrick Day and sailed in over static substitute keeper Andy Glasspool. Two minutes later Kanoute skipped past Glasspool and squared for Keane to slot into an empty net.

Brown gave some of his younger squad a run out later in the second half, as Jol made several changes of his own, but in truth weary legs had taken hold of the Shots.
