Shots Can't Afford To Lose Another Game

The Shots boss – speaking to Jon Couch, made his bold assessment after the 2-1 defeat at runaway leaders Barnet and ahead of another crucial clash tonight when fellow contenders Exeter City visit the Recreation Ground – kick off, 7.45pm.

But before Brown can contemplate The Grecians, he has plenty of talking to do.

Clearly not happy with what he saw at Underhill against a Barnet side reduced to ten men for 20 minutes, Brown described the performance as "brain dead" and warned that unless vast improvements are made at The Rec tonight, then the scoreline will go the same way.

As a result, the boss is expected to make another last ditch attempt to sign Farnborough Town midfielder Gary Holloway this week — and is likely to succeed.

With Dean Austin now ousted from the Boro hot-seat, the situation regarding Holloway's contract have changed matters and Brown is leading the hunt for the playmaker's signature.

Judging by Saturday, Holloway would certainly be a welcome addition.

They may have been workmanlike and committed but there was a distinct lack of quality on the ball for long periods — a fact that Brown was quick to point out.

A debut goal for 18-year-old loanee Jake Robinson was one of a few positives, but it was the way in which Barnet stormed into a 2-0 lead, which worried the boss and led to a dressing room dust-down afterwards.

Brown stated, "I said before the game this is a small ground where the ball runs away quickly. You can't just pump the ball forward like we did. We were brain-dead in the first half.

"I was delighted with both of my new players but some of my senior players, who have been moaning about new blood coming in, need to take a good, long look in the mirror and ask themselves whether they did enough to warrant a place on Tuesday, because we will need to play better than that to get the points.

"Barnet were better than us and I'm bitterly disappointed with our performance today. We had the perfect opportunity to test their nerves if we'd have had the guts and the courage to get the ball down and pass it. The whole team worked their socks off but it's not enough. You need to have that courage to pass the ball and when we did we created good chances.

"We had two wingers out there, playing against ten men and we're still ploughing troughs down the middle. It's brain damage."

It wasn't to be for the Shots, and after a post-match grilling of his men, the boss could afford to be more philosophic with the big Exeter game now looming large.

He rounded off, "We've done the ranting and raving but we've left on a positive. The one game we could afford to lose out of the 33 points available is today. We can't afford to lose to Exeter and we can't afford to lose to the teams around us."
