Shots To Unleash Turner On Lowly Rovers

Last updated : 25 November 2005 By Stray Shots Team
Terry Brown will be looking to make it five wins on the bounce this weekend as he prepares his side for the visit of lowly Forest Green Rovers.

The Shots have only one defeat in their last eight matches and they could find themselves in the Conference top ten with maximum points on Saturday.

In Forest Green, the Shots take on the side at the foot of the table, with just one point from their last five league games. But they have a couple of familiar faces who are likely to be in the starting line-up on Saturday.

Julian Alsop whom Brown tried to sign in the summer will be up front along with another summer triallist Guy Madjo, who is on loan at The Lawn.

The young striker failed to get a work permit whilst with the Shots before moving on and winning a contract at Bristol City. Former Shot Jamie Gosling was released last week by Rovers boss Gary Owers.

In contrast to Forest Green's fortunes, the Shots are riding high in the form table and are unbeaten in their last four league games after a torrid start to the season.

And for the second week running, Brown is able to bring in a new face to boost his squad with the arrival of 19-year-old striker John Turner on a one-month loan from Cambridge United.

The former Aston Villa trainee is currently out-of-favour at the Abbey Stadium and has been trailling recently at Rushden & Diamonds and Scunthorpe.

Thankfully for the Shots, he arrived just in time as Thursday was the cut-off date for loan deals before the transfer window starts.

Brown commented: “He's a very, very talented boy and there were a lot of offers for him in the summer.”

Turner aside, the boss is likely to stick with the same line-up that beat Cambridge 2-0 on Saturday, with the only new injury concern being Lewis Hamilton, who pulled a thigh muscle in Tuesday's Hampshire Senior Cup tie with Fleet Town, which was abandoned just after half time.

Turner, however, will have a battle on his hands for a place in the starting line-up as he goes head-to-head with another loanee, Ashley Vincent, to partner nine-goal Tim Sills up front.

Matt Gearing, on a work experience deal from Northampton Town, is fit again and could also figure.

Speaking in the build-up to the game, Brown added: “It's going to be very, very cold, no doubt the pitch will be rock solid. Hopefully we'll get it played because I don't want to fall too behind on fixtures.

“I think we've got a similar scenario to Cambridge, they're a big strong physical side. If we can get it down and play our football like we did against Cambridge we'll be OK.”
