Tel Closing In On Right Back

In the article, Couch announced that Terry Brown has bounced straight back into the managerial groove after a hard-earned rest this week — and immediately closed in on a new transfer target.

After a week relaxing on the golf courses of Portugal, Brown was back at his desk at the Rec on Wednesday and ready to complete a deal to bring a highly-rated right back to the club.

Brown refused to reveal the identity of the player until the deal was done, but is thought to be a sought-after youngster ready to stake his claim for a regular first team shirt.

The signing of this transfer target heralds the start of a busy period for Brown, who is desperate to have the majority of his squad in place for the first pre-season friendly against Queens Park Rangers on July 8.

The Shots chief is currently feeling frustrated, with the managerial merry-go-round in the Coca Cola Leagues clearly hampering his progress.

Unbelievably, Brown has deals set up with Brentford, Northampton and Wycombe Wanderers, but all three have recently seen their managers depart, thus putting the transfers on the back burner.

Meanwhile, the chances of luring loanee Jonny Dixon from Wycombe have receded further after the Chairboys re-signed the striker, meaning a fee would now be required.

Brown explained: “It's been very frustrating at times, yes, because these deals were done and dusted.

“Just our luck, though, that the managerial merry-go-round affected all three of the clubs we had deals with. That's football, though, I suppose.

“I'm not perturbed though. Next week is an important week for me because players will all be back from their holidays.

“Every number I've called seems to have an international dialling tone.

“I'm desperate to get some quality players into the club and I'm confident we've got one in the right back I'm hoping to sign this week.

“The difference between this year and last is that I want to get everything done and dusted a lot earlier, so there's plenty of work still to do.”
