Terry Brown has wasted no time in beginning his summer clear-out, as he wields his axe by showing a hat-trick of Aldershot Town players the door.
Jon Challinor, Chris Giles and Dwain Clarke are the first to be released as Brown looks to reshuffle his pack ahead of launching their bid for promotion.
For some fans the name of Challinor on the released list will be a surprise, but the creative midfielder has been attracting interest from a number of clubs with Exeter City and League Two side Oxford United the front-runners for his signature.
Popular Challinor has struggled to force his way into Brown's starting line-up for the last few months, and the boss says that this is part of the reason for his departure.
Brown said: “We had a long chat, it was a mutual decision. Jon wanted to know if he was going to be the first starting, and with Watson, Lee and Holloway, it made it difficult to say yes. I have three midfield players already fighting for two places, so it's about getting the balance right.”
Winger Clarke is likely to continue his football with a part-time side, while Giles had been transfer-listed for some time, despite deputising very well at right-back.
“All three players are quality Conference players and I have had enquiries about all of them. I used my full allocation of budget last year so I also need to free up funds in order to get two quality strikers,” added Brown.
Whilst the boss is scouring the transfer market for strikers, Brown is adamant that Tim Sills will not be leaving the Recreation Ground, although hinted that injury-hit striker Roscoe D'sane may well be following the trio out of the door at the Rec.
“We all want the same thing, we all want promotion, how am I supposed to attract players or keep hold of players if I let my best striker go?
“Tim is at the age where he wants to be a pro, and it's my job as manager to get us into the Football League in the next year or two.
“The situation with Roscoe is that he is still nowhere near fit, he's not even training. We are in a situation where we have to get fit players in that can help us win promotion,” said Brown.
The boss has been in talks with current players all week, as well as opening negotiations with players he hopes to entice to the Rec.
For Brown, matters at the front of the park are not his only concern, as his centre halves are attracting interest from the League as well.
He said: “Brett Johnson is getting a lot of interest and with Warbs retiring I am looking at experienced centre halves. If the worst came to the worst and we lost Brett and Will [Antwi] we would have provisions.”
The boss was also due to hold talks with skipper Steve Watson and Darren Barnard (both out of contract) as the News went to press on Wednesday, but was hopeful of keeping hold of these key players as well as influential midfielder Dave Lee, with the offer of a new deal.
One thing is for sure, the clear-out isn't over yet, and there will certainly be more players making way as Brown continues his search for the stars of next season.
