Chewins (pictured) began his career at Alton Town as a 17-year-old when he showed more than a bit of promise and, by coincidence, current chairman Jim McKell was reserve team manager!
After a month or so the first-team manager took McKell`s advice and, as they say, the lad went on to do quite well!
"A number of us at the club have remained friends with Jason over the years," said director of football, Dave Hawtin. "We had always had a sort of 'fun agreement' that when the time was right he'd come back home."
Manager Clive Ventham added: "By Wessex standards, Alton Town is a 'non-paying' team and that remains the case. We have been able to offer Jason much of what he is now looking for at this time in his playing career and make provision that meets his expectations without breaking, infringing or depleting our current financial structure."
McKell stressed that the club's successful youth policy, with their under-18`s competing in the floodlit Allied Counties Youth League, will continue and, indeed, be enhanced by Chewins being at the club - and being willing to use his experience to help develop the club's younger members.
McKell went on to comment: "This is a youth policy that has already seen the likes of Ian Dyer, Richard Mealey and Nathaniel Sherbourne courted by other clubs. It is a youth policy that continues to be a conduit of progress to our Wessex League side - currently represented by Lee Marker, Sean Burton, Steve Brown, Dan Vincent, Steve Graham, James Hammond and Lee Tigwell, with a few more knocking on the door."
First-team coachoach Mark Tigwell added: "We are, of course, delighted that a player of Jason's standard has decided to join us and we look forward to his experience adding confidence to our young team."
After leaving Aldershot, for whom he played over 500 times and enjoyed a testimonial, Chewins had a spell with Havant & Waterlooville before joining Ryman League Premier Division side Ashford Town (Middx) during the 2005/06 season.
