The former Aldershot man, who completed a move to Oxford United for an initial fee of £35,000 earlier in the week, proved a real handful for the Rochdale defence.
Although he did not get on the scoresheet, Sills said he was made to feel at home by the United players.
"It was very important for me to make a good impact on my debut," he said.
"I have to prove to the manager, fans, teammates and most of all myself that I can cut it in league football, and I hope I have started to do that.
"It is obviously a higher standard, and the important thing was for me to get a good first three touches under my belt, and thankfully I did that and so could settle down."
Sills and Basham linked well throughout the match, and Sills was full of praise for United's leading scorer.
"Steve is a very clever player indeed, I'm not sure everyone knows just how clever he is," he said.
"I knew where he was virtually the whole time, so that helped me know where to try and flick on to, and where to look for him.
"I think Steve has been used as a bit of a target man this season, and that is not his game.
"Hopefully, with me to take the high balls off him, he can concentrate on his natural game."
Sills said that the step-up from the Nationwide Conference was not as dramatic as he first thought.
"There obviously is a difference, but it is not a massive one," he said.
"I felt the game was a little bit sharper than I'm used to, and I was a little bit tired by the end.
"But I think that was more because I was so excited this morning it took a lot of my energy out of me."
Sills refused to make a target of goals for his new club, but said that he has got his own thoughts on what he can achieve.
"I never make things like that public because you are then putting yourself under pressure to meet those targets," he said.
"I'm happy to have a target of one goal though, and maybe if I get that I will aim for two!"
