Their report stated, "The 37-year-old announced his retirement from full-time football at the end of last season having helped Aldershot Town to the Nationwide Conference play-offs.
But he is reportedly still keen to play on a part-time basis closer to his home in Northampton.
The Poppies boss is facing competition from Nationwide North rivals Nuneaton Borough for the veteran's signature.
But he insists Warburton – who helped Diamonds win the Conference in 2001 – is just the sort of player he wants to bring in.
Wilson said: "We are interested in Ray and I have spoken to him but I know Nuneaton have done the same.
"I know all about him from my time at Northampton and he has tremendous experience.
"He is a leader but more importantly he is a winner.
"He is the sort of player who will run through a brick wall for his side and that is just the sort of thing we are after.
"It's early days and we will just have to wait and see what happens with it."
