Rankine heads Shots to victory
Michael Rankine's header proved enough to earn Aldershot their first home league win of the season as Cheltenham's three-match winning run was ended with a 1-0 defeat.
The first half was an even affair, with both goalkeepers advancing quickly off their line to nullify danger. Ross Worner did well to deny Darryl Duffy in the seventh minute and Duffy also curled one over for Cheltenham early on.
Danny Hylton shot wide and Scott Brown saved well from the lively Jermaine McGlashan, who burst through one-on-one in the 24th minute after being played in by Peter Vincenti.
McGlashan caused problems for Cheltenham's defence with his speed on the right wing and Danny Andrew kicked Vincenti's header off the line before blocking at the near post as Aldershot pressed before half-time.
Russ Penn had an early chance for the Robins after the break but he placed his shot wide from a good position.
Hylton sent another speculative effort wide and McGlashan went within inches of opening the scoring in the 55th minute when his shot from the edge of the area beat Brown but rebounded off the crossbar.
The deadlock was finally broken when Rankine rose highest to nod in McGlashan's corner in the 71st minute.
Substitute Adam Mekki set Rankine up for another chance but he watched as his effort rolled inches wide of the far post.
The closest Cheltenham came to pulling one back was when Josh Low clipped the top of the bar with 10 minutes remaining.
