A goalless draw was not exactly what Doctor Dillon would have ordered, but as his predecessor would have no doubt stressed, Aldershot Town should never underestimate the value of a point.
Ultimately this was a missed opportunity to secure a win on his debut, but for all their pressure and chances, The Shots were sufficiently below bar to flounder against a solid Macclesfield back four. Keith Alexander’s side did little to threaten Aldershot’s third consecutive clean sheet, preferring instead to concentrate on packing their defence and frustrate their hosts throughout a backs-to-the-wall second half. A surprisingly low-key and stilted opening 45 minutes provided scant entertainment to warm the crowd on a bitterly cold and blustery day, but still Aldershot could and maybe should have taken the lead. The second half saw a raised tempo but the same outcome, and the fact that The Shots remain in tenth, just three points out of the Play-Off places, probably provided the day’s most pleasing statistic.
