Aldershot Town's play-off hopes suffered a serious blow as fellow contenders Stevenage took all three points in a smash-and-grab raid at the Recreation Ground.
The Shots dominated early proceedings with Nick Crittenden denied by the keeper and Adrian Caceres, Ray Warburton and Jake Robinson all off target.
However, the visitors picked up and on 17 minutes took the lead. Dino Maamria went through for a one-on-one with keeper Nikki Bull and, although it looked like the shot-stopper had collected the ball, Maamria emerged with it and tapped his shot into an empty net.
Gary Holloway, playing against his former side, shot straight at the keeper as the visitors' time-wasting tactics continued to frustrate the fans and players alike.
Dannie Bulman headed just wide of the post as Stevenage looked for their second goal.
The Shots almost levelled when Crittenden's free-kick from eight yards outside the area produced a fine save from keeper Alan Julian who tipped the ball over the bar to keep Stevenage ahead at the break.
The second half saw more of the same as Maamria headed over and Bull saved a Bulman shot while at the other end Steve Watson, who was also playing against his former side, saw his efforts saved.
Substitute Jon Challinor made an immediate impact when his long throw was almost headed into his own net by Jason Goodliffe. Julian somehow managed to tip away the ball once again and minutes later he saved Robinson's volley.
With 15 minutes left Shots boss Terry Brown brought the ineffectual right-back Tarkan Mustafa off for striker Scott Rendell as he searched desperately for a leveller with a three-pronged attack.
Tim Sills headed well over while Bull saved easily from Simon Weatherstone.
In the dying minutes the Shots tried desperately to get the equaliser and would have done so with a little target practice.
Holloway, Sills, Will Antwi and Warburton were all off target, with a neat block from Bull after Elding's one-on-one, sandwiched between. However it was all to no avail as Stevenage collected the three points to leave the frustrated Shots with nothing.
