Aldershot Town 1 - 0 Burton Albion

The Shots are on the brink of a return to the Football League after a narrow 1-0 win over Burton at the Rec this afternoon.

In front of a bumper crowd of nearly six thousand, the young Shots side looked nervy for the first time this season, and Burton will wonder just how they left the Rec empty handed.

With Torquay winning at Stevenage, the Shots still require a point to wrap up the title, but surely only an act of God could stop the Phoenix from rising to the Promised Land now.

Gary Waddock made only one change from Tuesday's starting line-up at Ebbsfleet, bring in Joel Grant for Kirk Hudson.
The visitors aided by a strong prevailing wind, controlled most of the first half.

In the 10th minute Nikki Bull produced a stunning save from Shaun Harrad's point blank effort - but the linesman's flag was already raised.

The Shots keeper was in action soon after, when tipping a 20 yard effort from the same player around the post.

The Burton forward had a number of opportunities throughout the game, and he will wonder quite how he failed to get on the score sheet.

In the 23rd minute Goodfellow's cross into the box found the unmarked Jake Edwards, who volleyed his effort from 6 yards well over when under pressure from Bull.

The Shots took the lead - against the run of play - in the 36th minute, with their first attempt at goal.

An exquisite chip into the box from Joel Grant, on the Shots left, was met by Elvins' header which looped over the stranded Poole and into the net.

In the 43rd minute a Harrad effort was cleared off the line by Straker, and just before the interval the misfiring striker had a golden opportunity to equalise.

It looked like Ricky Newman was fouled, but the Ref waived play on and Harrad was clean through on goal.

Nikki Bull came out to narrow the angle, and although it wasn't spotted by the officials he got an important touch on the strikers effort to deflect it wide.

Half Time: Shots 1 - Burton 0

The Shots did improve after the break, when attacking the East Bank, and after a mesmerising Joel Grant run, his cross into the danger area was well cleared by a defender.

At the other end, Anthony Straker did superbly well when hooking the ball away from imminent danger, in a central position.

In the 55th minute a well struck Soares effort was well saved at his near post by Poole.

Hudson replaced Joel Grant midway through the half.

Louis Soares then did well to dispossess Webster, before unleashing a fierce effort which Kevin Poole couldn't hang on to - but there was no-one in a red shirt following up.

After a nicely worked move between Gier and Soares near the corner flag, the latter found Hudson whose shot was heading for the top corner, before the flying Poole turned it over.

In the 75th minute Harrad's effort from a Goodfellow cross struck the outside of the post.

Then a decent curling effort from Hudson went inches over.

Scott Donnelly replaced Soares on 82 minutes.

When the fourth official raised his board, three added minutes were signalled and the Shots had to ride their luck through it.

Firstly a through pass saw Matt Williams just fail to get enough contact on the ball to turn it past Bull.

Then Darren Stride volleyed home at the far post, only for a raised linesman's flag to cut short the visitors celebrations.

Ricky Newman then had to put his body line to make a last ditch tackle 6 yards out.

Rob Elvins had the last effort of the game, but his shot, which was arrowing into the far corner, was well turned around the post by the keeper.
