Aldershot Town 1 - 0 Halifax Town

Dixon - Secured the three points for The Shots
Wright became the third Town player in three away games to be sent off when a second booking turned into a red card for the left back.

But the fact that is was a second yellow card and not a straight red rules out foul and abusive language towards the linesman - the only real infringement it could have been.

It followed a missed penalty from Rhys Day - harshly awarded in the first place for a Steve Bushell hand ball - and even with 10 men Town were more than comfortable.

But they were undone in the fifth minute of time added on at the end when Dixon struck to condemn the Shaymen to more away day woe.

The bare facts of the clash go nowhere close to doing justice to what was possibly the best away performance of the season so far.

And the most remarkable aspect of the whole afternoon was that a team as totally dominated as Aldershot could be flying so high in the Blue Square Premier.

The home side rarely threatened in the opening 45 minutes with a Louis Soares effort that flew across goal the closest they came to troubling Adam Legzdins.

But at the other end it was a different story.

Darryn Stamp's fifth minute flick released Steve Torpey on the left and he whipped in a cross that Daryl Taylor ought to have tapped home.

Three minutes later Wright and Stamp combined to release Lewis Killeen one-on-one with Nikki Bull. The Aldershot keeper managed to get something on the shot which was rolling goalwards when Dave Winfield got back to clear.

Town won a series of corners before Torpey picked out Wright in the area, but his shot on the turn went across goal and wide.

Then, just before the half hour, Greg Young's long free kick was headed on by Stamp for Steve Bushell whose volley landed on the roof of the net.

Aldershot's defence was happy to clear the ball anywhere - one effort went out of the ground and under a passing train.

But Town continued to create opportunities with Torpey twice delivering decent balls, only to be thwarted by the home side.

Soares was denied a shooting opportunity by Wright before the Shots were handed a great chance to break the deadlock in the 51st minute.

The free kick for Wright's foul on Soares down the right was dubious as was the penalty given when Ben Harding's free kick flicked off Rob Elvins' head and onto the arm of Bushell.

But when Rhys Day's spot kick went wide of the post it seemed that justice had been done.

Injustice followed within 60 seconds as the linesman called over the referee and he produced a second yellow for a mystified Wright.

Despite being a man short, Town continued to push forward and after breaking away down the right Daryl Taylor pulled the ball back for Killeen who was, once again, denied by Bull.

The keeper also did well to pluck a Killeen cross out of the air in his six yard box with Stamp waiting at the far post.

Aldershot had their moments, but Kirk Hudson fired over the top from a Rob Gier cross, Danny Hylton shot across goal and wide from the left and Hudson had an effort blocked by Cortez Belle, whose slip had let the substitute in.

Joel Grant fired straight into Legzdins's arms with seven minutes remaining and it looked at that stage like Town would claim a draw.

They even had the chance to win it late on when Matt Doughty escaped down the left before sending the ball goalwards, Bull clawing it away as he back-pedalled towards his net.

But hopes of a battling point were dashed in the fifth minute of injury time at the end of the game when Hudson played the ball forward to Dixon who tried a hopeful shot from 25 yards and his luck was in as the ball struck Legzdins left hand post and nestled in the back of the net.

Star Shayman
The pain on the faces of the Town players was plain for all to see as they slumped to the ground on the final whistle.
And no one will have felt it more keenly than skipper Tom Kearney who put in another tremendous shift for his side.
He was everywhere and it was partly down to him that it was difficult to tell that his side was a man short in the second half.
The same can be said about his midfield partner Steve Bushell who relishes the heat of the battle.
He took a knock before the break and looked in some discomfort, but he never looked like he wanted to come off and along with Kearney controlled the central area of the field from start to finish.
Lewis Killeen did not manage to finish the game after being chopped down in midfield midway through the second half, but he made his mark while he was there.
He was unlucky to see an early effort cleared off the line and was denied by home keeper Nikki Bull in the second half.
Kearney takes the three points in our season long competition with Bushell getting two and Killeen one.
