After losing at struggling Tamworth in midweek, Aldershot suffered their second defeat in a miserable seven days for the Hampshire club.

The Shots were well beaten by a spirited second-half comeback by Cambridge, who won 3-1, in what can only be described as a wretched performance by Terry Brown's young side.

Things looked promising for Aldershot when Leroy Griffiths gave the home side a first-half lead.

United, however, took control of the second half, and the match, by levelling early after the break through Michael Morrison.

Courtney Pitt then gave the visitors the lead, with substitute Craig Westcarr adding a third for United, who deservedly took all three points.

The opening exchanges were lively with both sides enjoying a lot of possession, but lacking the final ball to deliver the killer blow.

Kirk Hudson saw an early effort saved on the line by Scott Howie, after being put through by Griffiths.

The energetic Ryan Crockford then surged from midfield and latched on to a Griffiths pass but, once again, Howie was equal to the shot.

It was going to take something different to break the dour deadlock, and it duly arrived in the 34th minute.

Home keeper Nikki Bull punted the ball long and Griffiths rose to head into Hudson's path. Griffiths continued his run into the U's box and latched onto Hudson's cross to fire past Howie at his near post.

Three minutes after the break, United were level. Bull suffered a thigh strain at half-time, and the Shots were forced to send on substitute goalkeeper Daniel Weait for his first senior appearance.

The young shot-stopper's first duty of the afternoon was to collect the ball out of his net, when Morrison thumped in Jon Brady's corner.

A desperate defensive mix-up saw Pitt go round Weait after Ian Simpemba and Dave Winfield dithered, to give the U's the lead just before the hour.

With their tails up, United added a third after 75 minutes. Weait forced Ritchie Hanlon's 25-yard piledriver onto the bar, only for Westcarr to head the rebound into the unguarded net.
