Ian Sampson brought his side to the EBB Stadium on the back of a heavy midweek exit in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Hartlepool United. However the previous six matches had resulted in victory (after a penalty shoot out) at Championship side Reading and victory at home to Brighton and Hove Albion, both in the Carling Cup and tight draws versus Accrington Stanley, Bury and Wycombe Wanderers.
The match saw Shots midfielder Luke Guttridge featuring against a former club for the second time this season after the recent visit of Southend United. Guttridge made 63 appearances netting nine goals for the Cobblers before his switch to the EBB Stadium in the summer.
Wade Small replaced the injured Glen Little in the home line-up, the first change in league action that Kevin Dillon has made this season. Cobblers boss Sampson included seven players that started in that midweek visit to the north east.
