The Shots eventually came out 2-1 victors in a real battle against Salisbury at the Rec this afternoon.
The home side made a perfect start to the game when taking the lead in the third minute, but Thursday's exertions in the cup final obviously told, and they were never really at their fluent best.
Yet again they showed battling qualities in abundance, to come through to take all three points - but the visitors will rue a number of missed opportunities in the second half.
The opening goal came after an excellent through ball from Anthony Straker found Rob Elvins.
The former West Brom striker showed sublime control in bringing the ball down before smashing his half volley past the helpless Clarke.
Kirk Hudson then had a snap shot from an Elvins knock down, but it was directed straight at the keeper.
At the other end a dangerous cross was whipped in to the Shots box, but Matt Tubbs just failed to get a head on it.
In the 13th minute John Grant ran on to a superb through ball from Chalmers, but after he cut inside his shot flew straight at Clarke.
On the half hour Kirk Hudson almost replicated his goal of Thursday night, but this time after beating his defender, his fierce shot struck the base of Clarke's near post.
The game was beginning to degenerate into a battle at this stage, with Referee Mr Bull blowing his whistle far too frequently, which didn't help the flow of the game.
In a nasty incident, the visiting keeper took out Chalmers and Elvins in making a punched clearance, which left Chalmers needing extended treatment for a head injury.
In the 39th minute a spectacular overhead kick from Tubbs went narrowly wide.
Half Time: Shots 1 - Salisbury 0
Just before the hour mark the Shots came close to doubling their advantage, when a strongly hit back pass saw goalie Clarke mis-control the ball. Hudson saw his chance and he swivelled and struck his shot, but for the second time in the match he saw it strike the woodwork.
It came as no surprise when Salisbury found an equaliser in the 61st minute.
Nikki Bull did well to turn away a point blank effort, but the loose ball fell to Feeney who hammered it home.
Scott Donnelly replaced Lewis Chalmers five minutes later and shortly after, Hylton came on for Gier.
At this stage the visitors looked the more likely to score, and both Tubbs and Sinclair screwed volleys wide from inside 10 yards.
On 74 minutes Hudson hooked the ball through for Elvins, whose effort was well saved low down by Clarke.
A minute later the Shots had a gilt edged chance to regain the lead.
An excellent ball from Straker into the left channel found John Grant, who lobbed the advancing keeper, but his effort drifted just wide of the far post.
Then a well created move from Salisbury saw them have a man over in the area.
The ball reached Barnes but his well struck effort from 12 yards was superbly kept out by Bull.
Newman then replaced Grant which saw Hylton go up front from a wide right position.
Matt Tubbs then headed down for Feeney, but from a good position he sliced his effort horribly wide.
The defining moment came in the 82nd minute.
A deep Donnelly free kick to the far post was headed back across goal by Charles, where Hylton was on hand to power his header into the roof of the net from 6 yards.
The Shots almost increased their lead a couple of minutes later.
Harding found Hudson, who in turn slotted the ball through for Elvins, who saw his strike well saved by Clarke.
The Shots held firm for the remaining time without too many dramas.
With the news that Torquay were surprisingly beaten at home by Farsley, Gary Waddock - in private at least - must be thinking where and when and not if the Shots will clinch the title.
