Chester City lost their league status after failing to beat Aldershot Town at the Recreation Ground.

Mark Wright's team will be lining up with the likes of Barrow having failed to convince against a side in free all.

Chester got off to a fantasy start when makeshift centre-back Rob Elvins' poor back pass put 18-year-old Lloyd Ellams through on goal.

Nikki Bull made a great reaction save, but watched in horror as Ricky Newman needlessly pushed the youngster in the penalty area.

Ryan Lowe fired the spot-kick into the bottom left corner, forcing another stunning Bull save. Alert to the rebound, Lowe found the net at the second attempt.

Despite Aldershot's defence consisting of a striker, two wingers and a central midfielder they settled into the game well.

On 14 minutes Scott Davies' delightful lobbed pass was matched by an equally exquisite chip over the goalkeeper from Kirk Hudson.

Scott Donnelly then missed a good chance to put Aldershot in front when he skied a cleverly worked free-kick from the edge of the area.

On the half hour mark Lowe shot agonisingly wide of the right post from a tight angle.

Moments later Lowe went through on goal, one on one with Bull, the goalkeeper produced another breathtaking save to deny the striker.

On 51 minutes John Grant had a perfect opportunity to score from three yards when Jamie Spencer fumbled Jake Robinson's long-range effort.

The former Crewe striker contrived to miss highlighting again the torrid season he has had in front of goal.

Four minutes later Hudson gave Aldershot the lead with a stunning 20-yard volley. Again latching on to a Davies pass, the former Celtic trainee beat Spencer with sheer velocity.

On the hour mark, controversy reigned when Ellams tapped home from Lowe's pass with Bull prostrate on the goal-line.

Aldershot's defence appeared to stop, but Chester had no time for the game's protocol with their league status on the line.

In injury time Ritchie Partridge had the perfect opportunity to keep Chester's faint hopes alive, but headed straight at Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz from five yards.
