There was no joy on the road for the second game running for Farsley Celtic as they put in a creditable performance yet came away from Aldershot with nothing despite scoring three goals.
The Celts, in their debut season at Blue Square North level, had earned plaudits and admirers from their midweek game at Stevenage. They received similar generous comments after their display at Aldershot but no points as Aldershot replaced Stevenage at the summit after this win.
It was a ding-dong fixture that saw Colin Heath score his first goal for the Celts and the visitors get two late chances to level.
It was definitely not one for the faint-hearted, nor for the purists as mistakes and individual errors contributed to the excitement for any neutrals.
Farsley boss Lee Sinnott, a former defender, said: "Can I believe the last two games? Yes I can because I have stood and watched them and it underlines that we cannot continue to defend as we have been doing.
"I am not totally pleased with the forward play either. We could have got points from either game if we had converted a percentage of the chances we created.
"Other people will say we have done this well or that well but that doesn't wash with me as we are not winning matches and you can't gloss over that."
Farsley played well for over half an hour but Aldershot then broke the deadlock through Rob Elvins.
That remained the only goal of the first half but, just three minutes into the second period, John Grant put the home side two up.
Farsley hit back with two rapid goals to level the game. Gareth Grant broke through on the left flank and cut in to round the keeper before scoring and minutes later the same player, who was a constant threat to the home defence, beat defenders again before crossing for Heath to head in at the far post.
Aldershot substitute Ricky Newman volleyed home from the edge of the area on the hour to snatch the initiative back but in the 79th minute a run into the area by Gareth Grant was stopped by a foul and Stephen Downes netted the resulting penalty.
Just six minutes from time, John Grant slipped the offside trap and raced through to score what proved the winning goal.
Farsley duo Amjad Iqbal and Damien Reeves went close late on, the latter unfortunate not to get a penalty himself as he was pulled back while his shot was palmed for a corner by the home keeper.
